Camp Burnt Gin
Camp Burnt Gin, operated by SC DHEC, is a camp program for children who have physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for children and youth with special health care needs by providing a recreational experience designed to improve self-esteem, independence and the skills necessary to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Camp Burnt Gin is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable environment for all employees, volunteers and campers, whatever their gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, identity and disability. At Camp Burnt Gin, we celebrate our differences and build a safe community where campers and staff can learn, grow and experience unconditional acceptance.
Camp Burnt Gin offers a summer residential camp and virtual events throughout the year.
During the course of a summer session, campers have the chance to participate in a variety of programs such as instructional and recreational swimming, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, sports and games, fine arts and nature study. Staff members, in a ratio of one for every two campers, live with the children and assist those children who require help with their personal needs and participation in the activities. Camp Burnt Gin has two nurses in residence. Nurses are responsible for medication administration, first aid and overseeing medical treatments.
Our virtual program offers our campers the opportunity to connect with their peers, interact with camp counselors and continue to develop their social skills.
