Volunteer: Living History Volunteers at Historic Brattonsville

Travel Back in Time at Historic Brattonsville! Volunteers are needed to help deep dive into history in a way a normal site tour cannot provide. Having volunteers on site dressed in 18th and 19th century clothes performing historically accurate activities provides an immersive experience like jumping back into time! Volunteers gain skills and knowledge not normally seen today such as blacksmithing, weaving, carpentry, hearth cooking, and gardening! Volunteers are needed Tuesday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. We are looking for volunteers that are available for the full day or half day shifts once or twice a month.

*We also offer four Special Events and Specialized Living History Saturdays throughout the year that need extra help in other areas such as concessions and admissions.

This is a perfect opportunity for history majors, education majors, theater majors, or anyone who enjoys having fun and learning new skills.   Historic Brattonsville is an 800-acre open-air museum that discusses the lives of the family and community surrounding the historic buildings and experiences from 1780-1871. Living History Interpreters provide extra knowledge and activities for an immersive experience! The site includes a barnyard with animals and hiking/biking trails.

The mission of Historic Brattonsville is to preserve and present the history of the Carolina Piedmont and this Revolutionary War site as portrayed through the structures, landscape, and stories of the Brattonsville community.

Through award-winning programs such as Christmas Candlelight Tour and the Battle of Huck’s Defeat, Historic Brattonsville tells the story of its location from pre-Revolutionary War days, through the Civil War and antebellum period. Area residents are descended from the original settlers and enslaved African Americans, and some participate as historic interpreters at the site.

Volunteer: Museum Archives Internship

The primary goal of an archives internship at the Historical Center of York County is that interns will gain a better understanding of what it means to work in an archives or research library, leaving with skills that will better prepare them for careers in the field.

This primary goal is accomplished by focusing on 4 secondary goals of archival internships at the Historical Center of York County: Interns will gain valuable experience with arranging and describing incoming archival collections. Interns will be given the opportunity to learn how donations are processed. Interns will gain experience with cataloguing archival materials. Interns will gain technological skills specific to the discipline, better preparing them for the job market. The Archives Specialist will work directly with Archives Interns to accomplish the above goals by completing meaningful projects during their scheduled work days.

The Historical Center of York County, located in York, South Carolina, opened in 1989 to serve as the repository for York County court records and to collect and preserve the cultural heritage of York County and the Carolina Piedmont. In 1990, a major donation of family genealogies compiled by Joseph E. Hart Jr. helped establish the current archival collection. Since its creation, the collection has grown to include family papers, historic photographs, business records, local newspapers, rare books, and church records.

All archival materials, along with a collection of library books and genealogical resources, are accessible to the public in the non-lending Search Room.
