Welcome our freshman and returning students by helping us Recycle Right! Unfortunately, not all of our waste is recyclable. At Winthrop, we have centralized collection bins for plastic bottles, plastic jugs, plastic jars, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, and metal cans for recycling.
Recycling will be available during the Convocation Picnic on Monday, August 19, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The Office of Sustainability is seeking volunteers to help us ensure the recycling bins are free of landfill waste. While containers are labeled, unfortunately, landfill waste still ends up in the recycling bins.
Volunteers will monitor recycling bins and pre-sort recyclables, which may include pulling recyclable items from the trash. Depending on the number of volunteers, some will pick up litter from other areas of campus.
Recyclables include plastic bottles, plastic jugs, plastic jars, and all metals (clean aluminum food pans), all paper, and cardboard. All trash cans are paired with a recycling bin.
Below are some logistics, but they may need to be updated if changes are made to the event.
- The Convocation Picnic will likely be on the front lawn of the campus.
- We will be in front of Bancroft, and I would like to ask volunteers to arrive by 11:30 am.
- All supplies (gloves and trash grabbers) will be provided.
- All volunteers must complete the attached assumption of risk form.
- All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. No exceptions!
- Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather conditions and plan to bring water or a sports drink to stay hydrated during the event.
