Needs From: Winthrop University

Volunteer: 2025 Day of Service and Remembrance

Service is being part of something larger and influencing the values you want the community to exhibit.  Community service builds bridges within the community, creates a sense of community pride, instills empathy, helps build confidence, develops teamwork and leadership skills, supports ecological health, strengthens democracy, and fosters networking, among other positive benefits.  This service will encourage collaboration and fellowship, and celebrate the human spirit's response to a common cause.

Volunteers will assist with various tasks, general cleanup of the garden, clearing brush along the fence, building new beds, weeding, moving soil, or other tasks.  We will send details the week before, describing what we will ask the volunteers to do.

Background on the Event:

"Thanks to the support of many others in the 9/11 community, 9/11 Day has transformed September 11 into the largest day of service in America, officially recognized under federal law.  More than 30 million Americans and others participated, dedicating time each 9/11 to helping others in need and rekindling the spirit of unity that brought Americans together in the days following the 9/11 tragedy."  (911day.org)

Volunteer: 2025 Homecoming Tailgate America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is a campaign that promotes the importance of waste reduction, diverting waste from landfills, reducing food waste, and recycling.  However, it is an opportunity to improve upon these actions every day.  Test your knowledge by taking the America Recycles Day Quiz.

Tailgate event recycling brings unique challenges with sorting the items collected.  One of the main challenges during the event is that folks place non-recyclables into recycling bins.   To help address this problem before it is sent to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), volunteers sort all recycling receptacles before they leave the tailgating area.  Sorting during the event is the easiest way to accomplish this goal because 'many hands make light work.'  This is an important job because if the recyclables are contaminated with non-recyclables and food, the entire load could be sent to the landfill if the contamination rate exceeds 5 to 10% of the material collected.

Therefore, the Office of Sustainability is recruiting volunteers to assist with sorting the recycling during the Winthrop Homecoming Tailgating event. Even if you are attending the event with a group, we encourage you to take an hour or two to pitch in to help us before, during, or after the event.  Teams are welcome to join, but please limit the size to 6 people per shift.

Below are several important notes for volunteers:

The tailgating event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. Tailgate participants are expected to tear down and clear their site by 4:30 pm.  Therefore, the goal is to have the area cleared by 5:30 p.m.  Volunteers helping from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. will assist with setting up trash/recycling stations. All 3 p.m. volunteers will begin helping 'tear down' trash/recycling stations.  This includes loading recycling into a recycling truck and moving trash/recycling stations to a central location. All volunteers will be sorting recyclables, which may include pulling recyclable items from the trash.   Recyclables include plastic bottles, plastic jugs, plastic jars, paper, cardboard, and all metals (including clean aluminum food pans). Although the tailgating policy does not permit the use of glass, we still collect a significant amount of glass for recycling.  We cannot commingle glass with other recyclables.  However, we will have bins available to collect any glass that volunteers collect.   Gloves and tools will be provided to each volunteer. All volunteers shall wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. No exceptions! See the new tailgate policies and event details at www.winthrop.edu/homecoming/ Registration closes on Wednesday, November 12th.  Additional details, including parking, will be sent to volunteers by Friday, November 14th.   For families or volunteers under 18, some tailgating groups will play loud music of various genres, and some tailgaters will consume beer and alcohol.

Contact the Office of Sustainability if you have any questions at sustainability@winthrop.edu.

Volunteer: 2025 Make a Difference Day - Spooky Campus Litter Clean Up

Make a Difference Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of October.  However, we will host our Make a Difference Day service the week before. If you have ever wondered if your actions can make a difference, the answer is yes!  Start by cleaning your backyard because volunteering is all about influencing the value you want the community to exhibit.

Because litter is an ongoing problem in our community and on Winthrop's campus, we must stay vigilant in our efforts to clean it up and improve the appearance of our communities and campus.

This litter clean-up is open to STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF.

All supplies (gloves, bags, trash grabbers, vests) will be provided. All volunteers must complete the attached assumption of risk form. All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather conditions and plan to bring water or a sports drink to stay hydrated during the clean-up. For safety reasons, no one will be allowed to pick up litter alone – all volunteers will be grouped with at least one other person. We can accommodate different needs.  If you are in a wheelchair, you may collect litter along sidewalks and in parking lots.  Contact us if you have any questions.

The required Assumption of Risk form is attached.

Volunteer: Museum Archives Internship

The primary goal of an archives internship at the Historical Center of York County is that interns will gain a better understanding of what it means to work in an archives or research library, leaving with skills that will better prepare them for careers in the field.

This primary goal is accomplished by focusing on 4 secondary goals of archival internships at the Historical Center of York County: Interns will gain valuable experience with arranging and describing incoming archival collections. Interns will be given the opportunity to learn how donations are processed. Interns will gain experience with cataloguing archival materials. Interns will gain technological skills specific to the discipline, better preparing them for the job market. The Archives Specialist will work directly with Archives Interns to accomplish the above goals by completing meaningful projects during their scheduled work days.

The Historical Center of York County, located in York, South Carolina, opened in 1989 to serve as the repository for York County court records and to collect and preserve the cultural heritage of York County and the Carolina Piedmont. In 1990, a major donation of family genealogies compiled by Joseph E. Hart Jr. helped establish the current archival collection. Since its creation, the collection has grown to include family papers, historic photographs, business records, local newspapers, rare books, and church records.

All archival materials, along with a collection of library books and genealogical resources, are accessible to the public in the non-lending Search Room.

Volunteer: FOOD DRIVE TO COLLECT DOG AND CAT FOOD FOR PETS OF SENIORS IN NEED

The York County Council on Aging is in need of dog and cat food for the beloved pets of our community's senior citizens in need. Our volunteers tell us that many seniors split their Meals on Wheels lunch with their pets because they can't afford pet food. In the past, Winthrop has held several pet food drives which provided us with plenty of food to send out to our home-bound seniors for their pets. For a lonely senior, their pets are often their only  family, their best friend, and the reason they get up in the morning. When they split their lunch with their pet, neither the senior nor the pet gets proper nutrition. Pet food drives are wonderfully helpful.
