Sort recycling on Friday, November 14, 21, and December 5. We will not meet on Friday, 11/28.
America Recycles Day is a campaign that promotes the importance of waste reduction, diverting waste from landfills, reducing food waste, and recycling. However, it is also an opportunity to improve upon these actions every day. Test your knowledge by taking the America Recycles Day Quiz.
Winthrop generates an estimated 2,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) each year. However, we only divert about 8% through recycling. However, we know we can do better through recycling and simply reducing the amount of waste we generate. To increase recycling rates, we need to increase recycling collection while lowering the contamination. Therefore, we believe that one way to do this is for people to sort recycling.
If you recycle, this opportunity will provide insight into the process. If you do not recycle, this could be an opportunity to learn the recycling process, better understand why certain items cannot be recycled, and that recycling does make a difference. In either case, this will give people an opportunity to meet new people, ask questions, and become advocates for waste reduction activities at Winthrop. Further details will be emailed to volunteers before the service.
Please meet at the Facilities Management office at 349 Columbia Ave. It is building #12 on the attached map and is located across the street from the Courtyard.
