Description

Winthrop’s Earth Day 2026 event on April 21st, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Scholar’s Walk.

We need volunteers!  Volunteers are needed to help with the recycling table and the free table.  Or, if you have an idea for an activity, please sign up and let me know what you will need for it.

Organizations Representing the Rock Hill and York County Community

Each of you offers a unique opportunity to share how you are tied to sustainability, specifically the interplay between social, ecological, and economic systems.   Sharing what you do with our students, faculty, and staff will inspire transformation through action.

Faculty and Staff

Last year, we showcased a handful of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles.  Please contact me if you would be interested in displaying your EV or Hybrid vehicle.

Student Organizations

Often, sustainability focuses only on environmental concerns.   However, social justice, ecological integrity, and economic vitality, the three aspects of sustainability, are inherently interconnected.  For instance, research is showing that the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities are at a greater risk of the effects of climate change, which not only include the environmental damage, but also the economic losses and displacement of large numbers of people.  Another example finds that the lack of trees in a community increases heat-related illnesses in marginalized communities.  Earth Day’s founding was not driven by the desire to celebrate the Earth but by a grassroots movement for transformative action.  We now recognize that the health of natural systems is also dependent on the health of social and economic systems.

Activities

In addition to sharing information about your organization, you are welcome to offer interactive activities that encourage participants to reflect on what Earth Day means to them. Alongside your participation, we will host tables introducing students, staff, and faculty to recycling programs, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and donation drives associated with the move-out period.

The event will also feature a showcase of electric vehicles. A free table with reusable, durable items will be available; you are welcome to contribute items to this table.  Please let me know if you have any ideas for the event or suggestions for other groups to invite. Finally, do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
