The Growing Readers Project is a Winthrop University service learning program aimed at improving reading habits among elementary age children by spreading the message that reading is fun and by increasing access to books. In this service program Winthrop students read with children regularly and give out free books to kids in need. The Growing Readers Project promotes a love for reading by spreading the message to children that college students read books and that they read for fun. Children in the Challenger Afterschool Program are invited to play games, read one-on-one with a Winthrop student, and pick out one “just right for me” free book. Beyond creating access for children to get free books, Winthrop students are able to have an ongoing conversation with children about life in college, and the importance of reading.
For this particular project, we have partnered with the Challenger Afterschool Program at Richmond Drive Elementary School.
