Description

Make a Difference Day was initiated in 1992 by “USA Weekend,” a magazine that partnered with Points of Light, a non-profit organization founded by former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.  Celebrated on the fourth Saturday in October, National Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of community service in the United States. It's a time when people step up and take action to make positive changes in their communities.  National Make a Difference Day is dedicated to encouraging people to volunteer and serve their local communities to improve the lives of others and teach the important lessons of compassion.  This year, the Office of Sustainability is hosting a campus litter clean-up to help our Facilities Management staff keep our campus clean.  Community service helps show others what kind of community we want to live in and an opportunity to meet new people with similar interests.

This litter clean-up is open to STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF.

  • All supplies (gloves, bags, trash grabbers, vests) will be provided.
  • All volunteers must complete the attached assumption of risk form.
  • All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather conditions and plan to bring water or a sports drink to stay hydrated during the clean-up.
  • For safety reasons, no one will be allowed to pick up litter alone – all volunteers will be grouped with at least one other person.
  • Contact us and/or add a note if you want to do the litter pick-up in a specific campus area.  For instance, if you work in the Library, you may want to clean up litter from around the Library, Withers, Dinkins, and Stewart House.
  • We can accommodate different needs.  If you are in a wheelchair, you may collect litter along sidewalks and in parking lots.
  • Contact us if you have any questions.

The required Assumption of Risk form is attached.
