Who We Are

Vision: ParentSMART empowers parents, caregivers and children to inspire lifelong learners.

MISSION: ParentSMART is committed to providing leadership, educational support, and resources to collaborate with parents and caregivers in their role as the child's most influential teacher.

ParentSMART began in 1995 as a mandate from the South Carolina State Department of Education under Act 135. The mandate stated that all school districts in the state would create Parent Education programs to support parents in their role as their child’s best and first teacher. Over the past 30 years, ParentSMART has grown into much more, supporting families in their role as the child’s first and most influential teacher. Through our partnerships, both formal and informal, ParentSMART has evolved into a one-stop shop dedicated to empowering families for their children to become successful in school as well as in life.

What We Do

ParentSMART Programs:

Parents as Teachers Personal Visitation Program – Serving families with children birth – kindergarten including expectant parents. A certified family educator visits bi-monthly providing support to parents in their role as the child’s first teacher.

ParentSMART Family Literacy Partnership: Parents and children come together to learn in a family friendly environment where “Parents are at the Heart of Education.” Parents can earn their GED and/or learn English while gaining support in reaching family and career goals. Participants learn how to prepare their children for school success, increase their knowledge and confidence regarding child development and benefit from a variety of family enrichment activities.

ParentSMART & Me interactive Literacy – PACT: Monthly group sessions (AM & PM) for parents and children ages 2 to 5 years of age. Designed to motivate play and positive interactions between parent and child. This group offers developmentally appropriate activities free of charge.

Teen Parent Program: A certified family educator visits bi-monthly and provides support to teen parents in their role as the child’s first teacher.
